William A. Screws, Sr.

William Anthony Screws June 16, 1924- June 3, 2009 COLUMBUS, GA— William Anthony Screws Sr., 84, of Columbus, GA died at St. Francis Hospital Wednesday, June 3, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2009 in the Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road Chapel. Pallbearers will be Matt Leonard, Allen Leonard, Paul E. Griggs, IV, Jake Farr, Bill Avant, Gunars Dzenis and William K. Avant. Entombment will follow in Parkhill Cemetery, Chapel of the Pines Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. this evening, Friday, June 5, 2009 at the funeral home. Mr. Screws was born June 16, 1924 in Columbus, GA son of the late Charlie Frank Screws and Willie Maude McGregor Screws. Mr. Screws married Angelyn Allen in February of 1945. He then answered the call to serve his country during WWII, joining the Army Air Corp. Mr. Screws was a graduate Jordan High School, and he earned a Bachelors of Arts from Troy University, a Masters of Education from Mercer and a Specialist Degree from Auburn University. His influence in the Field of Education spanned 51 years, but he will always be remembered as an icon of Jordan High School where he served as Assistant Principal for nine years and as Principal for 23 years. Mr. Screws was also active in the community coaching for 17 years, serving as a Representative on the Georgia High School Association for several years, serving in Rotary and playing on the Seniors Softball Team. Mr. Screws never met a stranger and often met people, whom he helped to mold during their youth under his leadership, almost everywhere he went. We, however, will remember him as "Papa" and for his love and devotion to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Angelyn Allen Screws of Columbus, GA; two children, William Anthony Screws, Jr. and his wife, Joanne of Laurens, SC, Peggy Leonard and her husband, Michael of Fayetteville, GA; five grandchildren, Marie Richards, Allen Leonard and his wife, Melissa, Genie Dzenis and her husband, Gunars, Matthew Leonard and Stephanie Rosehart; eleven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
